"If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the
religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home." -
James Michener
Travelling in a foreign country means getting know the people,
the customs, the food and way of living of the locals.
So you will have to forget at least for one night all the
tourist bars of Gouves, Hersonissos or Malia and head to
Heraklion.
The best way to start your evening is by a nice dinner. We
propose the 50-50 restaurant inside the Agora. Fascinating design,
trendy faces, creative cuisine and local wine. The surprise comes
after midnight when the doors close and the restaurant becomes a
bar with Greek pop music.
Inside the Agora there is also Pyxida, a new music scene for
Greek and International bands and artists.
If you like rock music then visit the "Rolling Stones" or the
"Hit Jazz" bars at the centre of the city.
Room 109 bar / next to Talos Plaza Shopping Mall is a meeting
place for young people (25+), and just opposite ENVY café &
club is probably the most famous summer club in the city for all
ages.
In Talos Plaza 2nd floor, Forum Café offers a wonderful view of
the sea and the beach area.
For Latin Music and Cuban atmosphere you have to pay a visit at
Habanero (Handakos street). Free salsa lessons almost every
night.
Pagopoieion Bar - Restaurant is the meeting place of the
intellectuals of the city. Tucked away in the corner of a leafy
square, next to the Church of Agios Titos (25 August Street), this
café-bar-restaurant serves up goodies such as risotto with shrimps
and saffron, salmon steak in grape sauce, plus colorful seasonal
salads. The bar which is separated from the restaurant offers all
kind of drinks and cocktails, with special Djs on the decks playing
different forms of house and electronic music.
If you are brave and maybe drunk enough (!) the best way to end
your night is at Levare bar (54, Papandreou str.). On Fridays and
Saturdays best hour to be there is after 03.00 a.m. (Yes this town
never sleeps!). Music is strictly Greek dance music.
Tip:
nightlife in Heraklion is unique. There are always places where you
can go out, dance, laugh, talk, flirt... In Heraklion, going out at
night is a fountain of culture. There is something for
everybody.
Best way for you not to miss anything is to provide yourself
with an updated city guide of events and nightlife. Free press
magazines like MONITOR and FREEVOX will help you out. Our hotel
staff will help you out with the translation!
Odd
info: the mole of the harbour connecting Koules
Fortress with the Lighthouse, about 2 km long, is called by the
locals "the bypass road"
Can you guess why?
