Music to take with you

Nikos Xylouris

Nikos Xylouris was a composer and singer from the village of Anogeia in Crete and also the older brother of two other great musicians of Cretan music, Antonis Xylouris or Psarantonis and Yiannis Xylouris or Psaroyiannis. Nikos Xylouris was part of the movement that brought down the Greek military Junta of 1967. His songs and music captured and gave voice to the Greek psyche and attitude, thus gaining himself the title the archangel of Crete.

Loudovikos of Anogia

Loudovikos is a contemporary story teller. Born in Anogeia Crete, he made his debut in 1985 with the album "Moirologia" as one of the talents discovered by the great Greek composer Manos Hatzidakis.
His music is magical, peaceful and touching reminding of the old song-tunesters that wondered through cities and the country.

Manos Papadakis

Born in 1980 and living in Heraklion, Manos Papadakis is one of the youngest artists of contemporary Cretan Music.
His music brings together modern sounds with a strong folkloric base and seeks to awaken the elements of myths & legends of the magical Greek music. His music imparts the feeling that you are partaking a secret dinner.
Tip: You can listen live to Manos Papadakis Every Friday and Saturday at musical scene Pyxida - Heraklion Down Town.

Ross Daly

Many years before the so called "World Music" appeared on the scene, certain individuals had already understood the enormous value and vast variety of the world's various musical traditions and had dedicated their lives to their study. One such person is Ross Daly.

Although of Irish descent, Ross Daly does not really fit into any particular ethnic stereotype given that his life has been spend in many different parts of the world and his home for the last 35 years is the island of Crete in Greece

Ross Daly, at a very early age, discovered that music was, in his own words, "the language of my dialogue with that which I perceive to be sacred".

This dialogue eventually led him to the great modal traditions of the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Indian Subcontinent where he finally found the musical archetypes that he had been searching for all his life.

In these traditions he encountered music which was not merely a vehicle of self-expression, but which was able to take one beyond what one normally perceived to be the boundaries of one's self into other trans-personal realms of experience.

Ross Daly now operates, teaches and performs at Labyrinth musical workshop in Houdetsi.

Hainides

Hainides is a band of musicians who follow the musical routes which link Crete with Asia Minor and the Orient with the Balkan region. They dare to create new musical trails which resound with the will for life, the beauty and the feeling of loss. Love and Death, and the fundamental powers are depicted in their beat to define "all the things you witnessed and have desired, and all the things you will never see".
