The history of Crete is intriguing & fascinating. In our
museums visitors have the opportunity to admire from close up the
achievements, the way of life and the treasures of the people who
lived on this island.]
You can admire a number of finds that come from different
periods of time, and different parts of Crete, in the various rooms
of the Archaeological Museum, where treasures of
the Palace of Knossos hold an important place.
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is regarded as one of Europe's
most important museums.
The museum brings together archaeological finds from all over
Crete, covering over 5500 years of the island's history. Pride of
place is given to the treasures of Minoan civilization, the entire
historical course of which can thus be appreciated. Justly regarded
as the home of Minoan civilization par excellence, the museum
houses the most important collection of Minoan antiquities the
world over.

The Historical Museum with its various
collections offers to the visitor a trip through time from the
first centuries A.D. to the present, with an emphasis on the
dramatic history of the city of Heraklion.
The Historical Museum of Crete (H.M.C.) presents a
comprehensive view of Cretan history from early Christian times to
the present.
The original goal of those founding the Historical Museum of
Crete was to collect and preserve valuable archaeological,
ethnographic and historical material deriving from the medieval and
modern periods in Cretan history.
The H.M.C. is home to the following

In the Museum for the Battle of Crete and National
Resistance the visitor can see relics of the glorious, but
heartbreaking, period of Cretan resistance to occupation between
1941and 1945.
The museum's aim is to collect, preserve and exhibit relics from
1941-1945 in an appropriate manner, as well as to document and
disseminate information on the people's struggle during the Battle
of Crete and the German-Italian occupation.
In addition to presenting a range of material witnesses to the
past, the museum aims to cultivate interest and respect for the
history of Crete.

In the exhibition room of the church of St. Aikaterini
of Sinai (Situated northeast of the Cathedral of St.
Minas) one can admire representative art work of the Cretan
Renaissance that exudes a certain religious awe to the visitor.
Damascene holds a special place amongst this very special school of
work.
The Museum of Natural History where representative samples of
the flora and fauna of Crete are exhibited.
Operating within the wider University of Crete framework, the
Natural History Museum of Crete fulfils all the roles demanded of a
comprehensive, modern museum by:
- Keeping and developing collections
- Carrying out research into the natural world
- Contributing to teaching at all levels in the education
system
- Promoting the unique nature of habitats in Crete and the
Mediterranean.
The museum's impressive growth over the last decade reflects the
competence and professionalism of its staff, as well as the growing
need in society for proper information concerning the
environment.

Lastly the Museum of visual arts that was
established in order to support cultural and artistic activity of
all kinds, with particular regard to the advancement and
strengthening of the visual arts and the promotion of work by
Cretan artists.
The museum acts as venue where artists, art lovers and their
friends can meet and exchange views in a spirit of solidarity,
co-operation and unity, and a place for aesthetic and intellectual
cultivation, recreation and learning. To that end, the museum
organizes educational seminars and lectures on matters relating to
art, as well as conferences, concerts, seminars and publications.
The venue is also suitable for use as exhibition space, for
association meetings and for nationwide or European-level
collaborative projects with other private or state-run museums.
