Nikos Kazantzakis
Nikos Kazantzakis was born in Heraklion, Crete, in 1883, during
the Ottoman Empire. He was the son of Michael Kazantzakis and Maria
and had two sisters.
He was a writer, poet and playwright. He is probably the most
important Greek writer and philosopher of 20th century.
His most famous books are: Christ Recrucified, Zorba the Greek, The
Last Temptation, Captain Mihalis and more.
His most important work, though, is Askitiki, with the dramatic
prologue.
"We come from a dark abyss, we end in a dark abyss, and we
call the luminous interval life. As soon as we are born the return
begins, at once the setting forth and the coming back; we die in
every moment. Because of this many have cried out: The goal of life
is death! But as soon as we are born we begin the struggle to
create, to compose, to turn matter into life; we are born in every
moment. Because of this many have cried out: The goal of ephemeral
life is immortality!".
